Sunnegga is where many people head to start their week. With access on the speedy Sunnegga Express funicular from town and its more southerly exposure, it’s easy to see why it appeals.
Skiing over from the Gornergrat side has also been recently improved, with the new (winter 2016/17) high speed 6-seater chair the Hublot Express from Gant up to Blauherd.
Complete beginners will enjoy the ‘Wolli Park’ at Sunnegga, a perfect place to start your ski career to the tunes of the lift operators turned DJs. Intermediates can enjoy a good selection of blue and red runs, and we think it’s worth heading up to the Kumme chairlift at the top at Rothorn for some quiet pistes in great condition. Both red runs back down to town have challenging steep sections, so they are not for everyone at the end of the day
More advanced skiers can test their skills on the black run ‘National’ which used to be a World Cup piste, or the awesome and challenging ‘Freeride’ yellow pistes down the Rothorn face (Marmotte is our favourite with spectacular views and almost always the run to yourself).
A short ski from Sunnegga down a winding blue run, you will also find the gastronomic hamlet of Findeln (just below the Wolli park), which is home to some of Zermatt’s most renowned mountain restaurants (including Chez Vrony, Adler and Findlerhof).
If a serious mountain restaurant isn’t your thing and you are looking for something relaxed and easy then check out the BlueLounge at Blauherd. They have an enormous terrace with comfortable sofas and bean bags, perfect for taking a pause on a beautiful day.
Sunnegga is a great side of the mountain to ski if the weather is bad. The Sunnegga Express almost always runs, because it’s a funicular running inside the mountain, which means you can almost always get up the hill.
The more southerly exposure and good pistes at lower altitude mean that the weather is often better on this side. The runs down from Sunnegga to town or to the Patrullarve chairlift are in the protection of the trees, so even if the wind is howling and the visibility is low you can enjoy some great skiing.
